"To accomplish this seemingly simple act of translation, you have had to learn a sign system (the alphabet), a host of rules governing the combination of the signs in the given system, and the connection between the signifier and the signified." (Miller & Jurecic, pg. 80)

Today, I feel as though we don't pay attention to the fact that the English language is so complicated and intricate. We just take the fact that we can speak English for granted, and this quote points out that us recognizing the simple word "cat" is really a more complicated than what it seems. Everything that is happening in our heads is connecting and helping us understand what we are reading.
