"To accomplish this seemingly simple act of translation, you have had to learn a sign system (the alphabet), a host of rules governing the combination of the signs in the given system, and the connection between the signifier and the signified." (Miller & Jurecic, pg. 80) Today, I feel as though we don't pay attention to the fact that the English language is so complicated and intricate. We just take the fact that we can speak English for granted, and this quote points out that us recognizing the simple word "cat" is really a more complicated than what it seems. Everything that is happening in our heads is connecting and helping us understand what we are reading.
I think if you do write about your life in middle school it might open up windows to show your side of the story how you are racially profiled in present day. Regardless or it being in middle school I would at least think that we are good enough not to be discriminated of being who we are and what we are. Talking about your experience and what you went through you can talk about how you dealt with it. It is a good topic to talk about how you manage to get through.
